Madonna Says Bye-Buy To Upper West Side Duplex

SELLER: Madonna
LOCATION: New York, NY
PRICE: $23,500,000
SIZE: 6,000 square feet, 6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Thanks to a tipster we'll call Bernardo Bigmouth Your Mama has just learned that her pop music madjesty Herself—that would be Madonna Ciconne Penn Ritchie—has put her long-time New York City duplex spread on the Upper West Side up for sale with a $23,500,000 price tag.

Miz Madonna no longer needs the multi-unit co-operative apartment in the distinguished  Neo-Italian Renaissance style Harperley Hall building on the corner of Central Park West and West 64th Street since she now has an elephantine 12,000+ square foot triple wide townhouse extravaganza on the Upper East Side that she bought in 2009 for $32,500,000 and spent millions more renovating and expanding.

Listing information shows Madge's 5th and 6th floor duplex offers more than 6,000 square feet with 10-plus foot ceilings, five wood burning fireplaces and 110 feet of frontage on Central Park. There are, according to online marketing materials, large living spaces on both levels with wide French doors and park-facing Juliet balconies and a park-facing formal dining room, a library and an eat-in kitchen fitted with marble slab counter tops, sleek chocolate brown cabinetry, a snack bar and and a dining area with a full wall of bookshelves.

There are, according to listing information, four separate bedroom wings with a possibility of six or seven bedrooms and a total of eight bathrooms. The master suite offers A-lister luxury with "endless closet space" and a vintage-style bathroom outfitted with twin pedestal sinks, claw-footed soaking tub and separate marble-lined shower.

The mini-mansion sized apartment has well-taken care of oak flooring, central air-conditioning, and a state-of-the-art sound and humidifier system. The full-service Harperley Hall building offers its well-heeled residents a central courtyard with manned gatehouse, access to a 20 car garage—we're not exactly sure who determines who gets to actually park in it—a bike room, laundry facility, a fully landscaped roof terrace and an on-site fitness facility that that exercise nut Madge would not have likely made use of since her apartment had a private one installed. Monthly maintenance runs $11,774, according to listing information.

Miz Madonna had the place decorated by her younger bother Christopher Ciccone who worked it the sprawling duplex over but good with pedigreed furniture, haute Art Deco details and an insane art collection the includes works by Tamara de Lempicka, Laure Albin-Guillot, Fernand Léger and Picasso. The apartment was photographed for the Architectural Digest.

As far as we know, in addition to her townhouse Madge still owns a horse farm in the Hamptons and a very private, French Country style mansion on Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills (CA) that Your Mama has repeatedly heard through the Platinum Triangle gossip grapevine might be quietly available for somewhere in the neighborhood of $28,000,000. She also owns a spacious 7th floor unit at Harperley Hall that she picked up in April 2008 for $7,350,000 but does not appear to be included in the current listing of the 5th and 6th floor duplex. Perhaps that's to come. We shall see!

*For what it's worth, nasal-voiced actress Fran Drescher has also long owned an apartment in the building.

"...decorated by her younger bother Christopher..." I think the other bother, Anthony, is more of a bother, is he not? And haven't her recent tours been more or less busts? Lady Gaga is where it is at now, right?

Are you kidding me? Madonna's current tour is outselling Gaga's tour with less dates, in both gross and audience attendance. It's on track to be one of the most successful of all time. She hasn't even included Australia and Asia, otherwise she will probably break the previous record for highest grossing solo tour of all time, which she set in 2008 and then broke in 2009 (she previously set the record in 2006). She currently holds the record, which she will likely break at some point. Lady Gaga's been struggling to sell in many markets with her tickets going 3 for the price of 1 or thousands given away for free, in addition to some shows being moved to smaller venues.

Christopher originally worked on the apartment many years ago, but others have since as well.

what's with all these gosh-darn hindis spouting their bs?

Not feeling it at all. I presume this is the apt she's had since the 80's, I would expect some dramatic and awesome Madonna-ness. Just blah.

I think she has impeccable taste -and agree that the architectural digest presentation was superb. I'd love to work for her - she's extraordinary.

the decor has a very 80s feel to it. Madonna's level of taste has always been questionable. I don't think she really cares how her home looks.

I imagine the neighbors are doing back flips that she has decamped the building. Her fights with other owners/board are legendary. Madonna will be shaking her anorexic body well into her 70s like Cher, as long as there are ticket buyers. I loved Madge in her prime and when I left her show two years ago after 45 min...it was that bad. And Chris was the brother that decorated it before they had a huge falling out over what...money. Sad.

A Leger painting (or copy) left over the fireplace, and 2 pathetic tea cups on the kitchen counter is NOT staging.

Madge the Vag moves from West to East.

Wow.

9:12: anorexic or over-exercised? She will forever remain in my memory as Guy Ritchie described her in bed: "a hard piece of gristle."

Is Grandma going blind? What a hideous and boring space. For a senior citizen who still tries so desperately to be relevant, you'd think she could have the sense to buy some style, since she herself obviously has none. She should probably drop the price by a couple mill too, since the new owner will have to rip out and replace all the carpet and flooring to get rid of that rotten fish eggs smell from all the times she's done the splits in here.

This shows what furniture, art, and setting the mood does.. Without furniture fails.

However, lovely layout, celebrity pedegree, great bones, minimal work needs to be done... Fabulous Gay designer and a few check and boom fabulous again!

BTW LONG LIVE THE QUEEN Madonna! Oops and Queen Mama too!

Did Madge use any of her apartments in her film W.E.? The bath in the photo looks v familiar?

Could have been a way of shaving money off the budget or knowing Madge earning herself some more.

I loved the film and thought the reviews were tres harsh, probs because M made it.

You would think that with a $23 million plus listing that someone would have replaced the burnt out bulb in the bath.

Anonymous said...

Jayne..great observation about the bulb. What bothers me even more are the sponges and opened bath products by the tub. Perhaps some odd buyer would be enticed by this personal property from Madge, but that buyer is probably not looking in the 20M range. Its astonishing that they would market a property like this with these photos.

This will sell for $15,000,000. There was a triplex in the building that sold for less than this price years ago?

Madonna has dreadful taste.

Anonymous said...

Not triplex, sorry, 4 combined units.

When did she buy this place and how much did she pay?

Harperley Hall is on Central Park West; however, it is not the German Renaissance Dakota, nor the Beaux Arts Langham, nor the later constructed San Remo, where Madonna once attempted to buy, nor the Beresford. Harperley Hall's larger apartments have comfortably sized public rooms with good bones and fine architectural details; yet, many of the bedrooms are small and contain peculiar angles. Madonna's apartment itself contains two "A"s and one "F"; specifically, two A-line apartments on adjoining floors and one adjoining F-line apartment.

Kinderlach, The Rabbi is certain Heaven has heard the cries of Anonymous 9:17, 11:35, and 3:05, along with those of Jayne and the Drooling Madonna. Oy! It pains the Rabbi that Staging Lady in a Pink Toyota has not heard nor heeded your pleas!

Most sincerely sorrowfully,
Rabbi Hedda LaTess

Her recent tour is sold out around the world. She has sold 2 million tickets at an average of $250 a ticket. With perfume, merchandising, album sales, and endorsements she is going to net around $500 million this year. Not bad for 53, and supposedly over.

The apartment will sell for close to asking. There is normally a celebrity premium built into the places she sells.

6:41 Must be nice to be the President of the Madonna fan club. She probably will sell out..Justin Bieber cleaned up at the AMA's too...

terrible staging from the listing agent, "Enjoy this refined ransacked apartment and live like a squatter...for only 23 million."

For $23 million I want a view of central park from my Bath.

For people smitten by riches, some remedial reading for perspective: the program "Poor Kids" on PBS. Enlightening. Watch it and squirm.

Whatever apartment she used in W.E. for Wally was divine...I loved how it looked and was decorated.

No. Just no.

...lets not forget she has long decamped from this space -years probably. There's no way that lovely Lola would live here... Right, Cookie Monster?

Loves me some Madge nonetheless.

I have not cared for Madonna in at least a decade, but there is one thing that is certain, she makes mega bank. She has pretty decent taste in real estate also.

thank you for saying that anonymous 7:51AM. I thought always the same thing too. I really don't think she cares how her home looks.
she probably just pays a very reputable credible interior designer and trust his judgement.
and I also don't even think she cares where she lives either like she's lives in all the expected places celebrities live in. Through the years she's owned homes in Los Angelas of course New York City, Mayfair in London, and in Miami when it was cool.
she also does not put a lot of thought to hear she buys her homes. which is why she has crazy people always breaking into her house is particularly in London and Miami during the 90s!!
