Floor Plan Porn: Drew Barrymore

Back in May (2013) Your Mama prattled on about the purdy Montecito, CA estate that child star turned powerhouse movie producer Drew Barrymore and her well born art consultant hubby Will Kopelman listed with an asking price of $7,500,000.

The two-ish acre spread remains on the open market at $7.5 million but, thanks to a succinctly spoken little birdie we'll call Monty Seetoh, we've learned that the floor plans for the spacious but understated 6200+ square foot multi-winged main house and its couple of garages/outbuildings are now included with online marketing materials.

In addition to the sprawling master suite and five guest/family bedrooms in the main house—each with small, private bathroom—the floor plan shows three fireplaces (living room, library, master bedroom), a compact powder room off the foyer, a walk-in pantry in the kitchen and more closets, cabinets and built-in shelves that even a hoarder like Your Mama would know what to do with.

We happen to think this house with it's meandering layout is kind of the cat's meow but we'd still make a few subtle changes including a minor reconfiguration (and renovation) of the kitchen that would open it to the breakfast room and allow for a less clunky access to the backyard areas. We might also add a dining terrace and discreet built-in barbecue just outside the kitchen/breakfast area.

We'd also flop the bathroom between bedrooms two and three so that the larger bedroom has direct access to the bathroom and that the smaller bedroom—a perfect home office since it has direct access through French doors to the secondary motor court and garages—would then make use of the bathroom across the hall.

No pool?

I like anything that is well worn. Unfortunately, everything about this house is worn out. I get that sad, riches to rags feeling from it.
The aged exterior gives the impression that this was once a one room cottage and grew overtime (by unskilled handymen) to accommodate a family. It doesn't have any merit justifying the reworking/salvaging of the interior. I hate saying this, but it's a tear down.

The cat's meow, indeed! Very '40s/'50s Rancho Santa Fe. I agree with all your changes, Mama, but would add one more. While I love a walk in pantry I'd probably reconfigure the space to be more of a butler's pantry and use that as the kitchen/dining room access, eliminating the direct door between those two rooms. A personal and minor squibble on the floorplan.

As I said in the last post, I feel it has a certain character, and has evolved over the years:

"The aged exterior gives the impression that this was once a one room cottage and grew overtime (by unskilled handymen) to accommodate a family."

Oddly enough, people out here in the Hamptons will pay a premium for just such an evolution. And God knows there is plenty of room for a pool/poolhouse complex -- could affect the pricing, however.

Fairly basic house for what looks like it was built in the mid-50's. It's amazing what location and a few extras does to the price tag! Would love to tour this house in person.

Actually CANDI, Pinecrest is correct. It's= it is.

Mama and KInderlach:

The Rabbi is feeling the Barrymore-Kopelman home in a religious way. New York- (and New Jersey-) sized living and dining rooms, an accessible yet isolated library, and a flexible bedroom arrangement for privacy seeking adults, extended and elderly family members, newly semi-autonomous adolescents, and adventurous houseguests a la Fiona Trambeau! The Rabbi endorses Mama's proposed renovations, while stipulating for a kosher kitchen, and supports Anonymous 1:29 p.m.'s recommendation for a butler's pantry. And of course the Rabbi favors "swimming pools, movie stars."

Rhapsodasically,
Rabbi Hedda LaCasa

Thanks Mama and enjoyed your thoughts about reconfiguring, however me thinks Bed/Bath #2 is ideal for live-in help given the separate entrance and private bath. As is, Bath #3 functions as the powder room, and if you were to reassign Bath #2 to Bed #4, then the live-in help would be subjected to 'sharing' their bathroom whenever you had a party. Bit much to ask of live-in help me thinks.

Boring and ugly house with a boring floor plan.
